If you’re looking for an adventure or an opportunity to acquire new skills or knowledge, HanYang International Summer School (HISS) is here to satisfy these needs. 7 UniSIM students from Accountancy, Finance and Marketing, have kindly shared with us their experiences when they were in the HISS programme. Questions were posted to these students and here are the insights about HISS.

Here is a sneak peek into HanYang International Summer School:

Spectacular views of the school

Ong Kai Xin, Year 2 Marketing Student

1. How would you describe your summer school experience in general? Why?

“My summer school experience is extremely eventful because i get to expose a whole new different school environment. I also gained a new perspective on knowledge, expertise and culture. New friendships were established with international students from different parts of the world. I have also formed stronger bonds with UniSIM friends who travelled and lived together with me.”

2. So how did the university carry out its school curriculum?

“It is a 4-weeks program and even though we are at Seoul, Korea, curriculums are conducted all in English Language. I took up two modules (Finance and Korean Language) in this 4 weeks and my classes are from Monday to Thursday, 9am-4pm.”

3. How does it feel to be in their school campus? Why?

“The school campus is extremely big. I need to walk a lot and climb many slopes to get from one destination to another. However, all these were good exercises and make me feel less guilty for indulging in all the korean food. Besides that, it felt great to be exposed as an international student and experienced the Korean’s university way of teaching ”

4. What modules did you pick up at that university?

“I took up Finance and Korean Language. There are a lot more modules that caters to different majors and interest to take up.”

5. Are you satisfied with the school’s delivery of that subject?

“Yes. As the lessons were conducted in English, I can fully comprehend the lessons. The professors are also very patient and helpful.”

6. What are the important takeaways you have from this trip (at least one academic and one non-academic takeaway)

“In terms of academic, it was really enjoyable learning Korean Language and its culture. I have acquired the various Korean verb tenses, the use of words and tone in different occasions and gained an understanding of the origins of many practices in Korea. Now, I am able to read the words and converse in basic Korean Language. In terms of non academic, i have gained a level of independence. Travelling overseas without my family’s supervision removed me from my normal routine back home in Singapore. For example, I have to do my own laundry, settle my own meals and buy my own groceries. Living in the foreign country makes me learn to take responsibility for my own actions.”

7. For what purpose would you recommend your peers to go on this trip?

“It is a very good opportunity for you to make new friends and gained more insights of the world. Go on this trip to build international networking connections which can be useful for you in future.” “Be more open minded and willing to try things. Be adventurous since it is probably a once in a life-time experience for you. Such opportunities does not come often. So grab it and just do it!”

Rosalyn Chong, Year 3 Marketing Student:

1. How would you describe your summer school experience in general? Why?

I thought that the summer school experience was great. It not only allowed me to experience a country as a tourist but also as a student in the education system.

2. Which modules did you pick up at the university?

I took Digital Studio & Psychology in Leisure & Tourism.

3. Are you satisfied with the delivery of the subject?

I think the delivery was more than satisfactory, it was actually pretty good.

4. What are the different element (in terms of curricular and campus life) you witness between UniSIM and the summer school you were attached to?

One of the things outside of academics that stood out to me in the school was their canteen! It was very interesting because I have never experience the ‘lunch line’ before. I don’t mean the queue to get the food but rather the style where the food is scooped onto your tray and people eat the same meals.

5. What are the important take aways that you have from this trip? (At least one academic and non-academic takeaway)

I feel that there are so many takeaways for this trip. Firstly, I would say that never say no to an experience before actually trying because you might really just miss out on an awesome experience. Sometimes what it seems on the outside is very different from being in it and experiencing it.

One academic takeaway is that learning can take place anywhere and for anyone. Everyone’s perspective is also different and they can offer you various insights that you might not have gotten from another person. When you are open-minded, you will realize that even in the simplest and most mundane things, there is more to learn.

Vanessa Chew, Year 3 Accountancy Student

1. How would you describe your summer school experience in general? Why?

In general, my summer school experience was very fulfilling. It was the first time I was overseas without my family for so long and I felt that it made me more independent and I learnt a lot during that month.

2. Any advice to give to potential UniSIM full-time students who are considering in going to this university?

Plan your timetable wisely! I would suggest taking modules where their lessons are in the morning and afternoon. I had afternoon and evening lessons that lasted from 1-7pm so I didn't have much time after that to explore Seoul. Although, the good thing about Hanyang University is that there are no school on Fridays!

3. Where do you and your friends normally head to after lessons?

We usually head to those popular shopping areas in Seoul to walk around, do some shopping and have dinner!

4. Rate your experience with the school out of 5 (5 being the best)

4/5. Hanyang organized many field trips for us such as bringing us to the mud festival and to Caribbean bay or Everland which I really appreciated!

Chua Li Zhen, Year 3 Finance Student:

1. How would you describe your summer school experience in general? Why?

My summer school experience was great! Nothing like it. It’s different from the one in poly (if you went for one during then). Because this OSS forces you to be independent - everything has to be handled by yourself.

2. Any advices to give to potential UniSIM full-time students who are considering in going to this university?

Yes! Read the module descriptions carefully. And think about what you want from it. Don’t waste your time taking modules that you think are easy to pass.

3. Rate your experience with the school out of 5 (5 being the best)

5/5

Keith Tan, Year 3 Marketing Student

1. How would you describe your summer school experience in general? Why?

Hanyang summer school has been a unique experience for me. Being away from Singapore and having to make independent decisions have been interesting. The curriculum is intensive but meaningful.

2. Which modules did you pick up at the university?

I took both international advertising and communications as well as international marketing in HISS

3. Are you satisfied with the delivery of the subject?

Delivery wise, I've observed that 4 weeks is inadequate for teaching an entire module. Similar to UniSIM, summer school relies on the student's initiative to further explore the content rich modules and to invest personal time into the understanding of the teachings.

4. What are the different element (in terms of curricular and campus life) you witness between UniSIM and the summer school you were attached to?

The immediate contrast between the two university is the physical vastness of hanyang university's campus ground. The curriculum requires us to attend school 4 times a week and as compared to UC, the modules in hanyang are more content rich. The lessons are less interactive and steers towards a lecture style.

5. What are the important take aways that you have from this trip? (At least one academic and non-academic takeaway)

Both two international modules have drill us on the hofstede cultural dimensions during lessons and have allowed application of the theory via projects. On a non-academic plane, I believe that I have grown to be more receptive of the different cultural behaviors and working styles of people from different countries.

And that’s all for now! If you are seeking international exposure while acquiring new skills or knowledge at the same, Hanyang University might just be the right thing for you! Stay tune for part 2 of the Hanyang experience with the fun insights uncovered from summer school.
