Recently, the annual SUniG took place and some of our UniSIM students were involved in the competition. Representing their clubs and school, they fought hard and brought glory to the school. Let’s hear from some of them as to what they have to say about their recent involvement in SUniG!

Congratulations on winning 2nd place in the recent SUniG Tchoukball competition! With one word/phrase to summarize your season, what would it be and why?
On behalf of my team, i would like to say thank you. It was a tough fight as all the other universities played well too. As for SIM Tchoukball Club, the season has been full of ups and downs. But fret not, we can only get better. Having been in a CCA for awhile now, how do you cope with both the school and your sports commitment? It boils down to having self-discipline, knowing where your priorities lie and not forgetting the support I receive from my family and friends. What would you advise your fellow peers on when it comes to joining a CCA? My advice is to be prepared to work hard on all fronts. It is never easy to juggle school, work and CCA, but if you manage your time well and put your heart into it, you can surely do it. How do you think your CCA has helped in your school work? It has taught me to be more determined in what I do and never to give up so easily when I am facing any difficulties. The competitions can be likened to exams. It's never a sprint, it's a marathon. You need to start your preparations early.

Congratulations on competing in the recent SUniG Handball Competition! With one word/phrase to summarize your season, what would it be and why?
Lots to learn. Throughout the season, I discovered a lot more about myself in terms of my strengths and weaknesses. I also realized that I could do more than what I thought was my limits. Not only that, Handball exposed me to a wide range of people and allowed me to learn to work with each individual effectively . Having been in a CCA for awhile now, how do you cope with both school and your sports commitment?
I will pre-plan my schedule. For example, if I know that there are a lot of submissions in the coming week, I will try to start early and finish as much as I can so that I can still cope with both school work and trainings. What would you advise your fellow peers on when it comes to joining a CCA?
Be committed to it & enjoy! How do you think your CCA has helped in your school work?
Handball has made me a more responsible person. Now, I take charge of my work and work better with deadlines.

Congratulations on competing in the recent SUniG Basketball Competition. With one word/phrase to summarize your season, what would it be and why? Tough. We had a new coach and that meant a new coaching style. We have been working very hard to clinch the championship but didn't manage to do that. Having been in a CCA for awhile now, how do you cope with both school and your sports commitment? It's quite a lot to handle with two to three trainings weekly and school deadlines. I strive to cope by planning way ahead. By listing out my deadlines early, I start doing assignments earlier and learn to complete it a few days before deadlines. What would you advise your fellow peers on when it comes to joining a CCA? Be ready to handle stress because it will be intense. Also, know which tasks to prioritize at the right time and strive to do well in both. How do you think your CCA has helped in your school work? School work gives me a lot of stress and Basketball allows me to release my stress by exercising and pushing myself to the limit. It also allows me to realize that I can do more and excel in them.

The above 3 interviewees - Farid, Shi Hui and Debbie play sports at a competitive level. Playing at that level does require a high level of commitment, passion and perseverance, which not many can manage well. If you are looking at just pursuing an interest, check out what our other two interviewees have to say with regards to the CCA they joined.

Having been in Handball for awhile now, how do you cope with both school and your sports commitment?
It has a lot to do with time management. Trainings are always fixed so I always plan my weekly schedule based on that and make full use of my non-trainings days to do my school work. Managing time well, planning beforehand and setting priorities are very important, especially during submission and exam periods. What would you advise your fellow peers on when it comes to joining a CCA?
If you have an interest, just go for it. Don't back out because of fears and all sorts of what-ifs. Nothing is impossible if you have the heart to make it work. If you don't do what you love now, then when will you?
How do you think your CCA has helped in your school work?
It taught me to handle stress well, shape me into a more responsible person and make me realize that I am much more tenacious.

Having been in SIM Dreamwerkz for awhile now, how do you cope with both school and your sports commitment?
First and foremost, I think it is important for one to understand and manage their priorities while they pursue their interests. With that being said, the ability to plan your schedule ahead and see projects through to completion are essential to ensure proper time management and timely completion of tasks.
Personally, I will first evaluate all the assignments I have undertaken and compare them based on their importance and urgency (e.g. deadline). I will then set goals on what I want to achieve within the time slot I have assigned to keep track of my progress to completion. It's Easier said than done and I won't deny that there are times when my schedule gets overwhelming despite planning ahead. But don't give up, you will only get better as days pass with every attempt to improve.
What would you advise your fellow peers on when it comes to joining a CCA?
Of course, join a CCA which you have interest in and one which you can envision yourself improving! I won't deny that it can be hard at times, especially during the peak period packed with practices in preparation for production.
Nevertheless, learn to maximise your time and enjoy fulfilling your daily responsibilities - be it at work, studies and CCA. Just like you, i am still learning to do that too!
How do you think your CCA has helped in your school work?
I wouldn't say that having a CCA has helped me in my school work directly, but it pushes me beyond my comfort zone and I learn to better manage my time in different aspects of my life.
